The board of the Association of Practicing General Practitioners is filing a lawsuit against the organization managing the Electronic Patient Dossier (EPD). This development highlights growing tensions in Dutch healthcare.
Updated System Launch
Since January 1, the new version of the EPD, known as the National Switch Point, has been operational. It currently holds around 400 patient records, with expectations for rapid growth. Patients visiting their GP are routinely asked for consent to include their data.
How the EPD Works
The EPD connects healthcare providers' systems nationwide, allowing authorized access to patient records. This centralized approach ensures all medical information is accessible in one secure file, benefiting coordinated care.
GPs' Objections
Many general practitioners oppose the EPD, arguing that the managing organization has failed to meet key agreements. They cite inadequate data protection, breaches of professional confidentiality, and risks of subtle pressure on patients to consent.
A crucial vote on EPD adoption is scheduled for Tuesday evening.
