Women have strong preferences for their contraceptive pill, but 70% remain unaware of the full range of options for making an informed choice. These insights emerge from a United Healthcare study of 500 women aged 20 to 45.
While women understand what matters most to them, many lack awareness of critical details. For instance, nearly 60% don't realize that a contraceptive pill helps protect against ovarian and endometrial cancer. And almost 70% are unaware that it's unwise to use the pill if you smoke and are over 35—this combination doubles the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Consequently, women often hesitate to switch pills. With limited knowledge about the pill, they struggle to select the best option or discuss it effectively with their GP.
"Many women are still using the same pill they started years ago—even those from the 1970s that some GPs favor. Newer options are available, and if women knew more about them, they would likely choose a better fit for their current needs," says gynecologist Ineke van Seumeren.
