While swine flu, also known as Mexican flu, has caused few fatalities in the Netherlands so far, reports of sudden illnesses among colleagues and friends indicate it's gaining ground.
Two additional deaths from swine flu have been confirmed, raising the national total to four. The victims—a 52-year-old man and an 85-year-old woman—were already in fragile health prior to infection.
Hospital admissions now stand at 90, with nearly half of patients also battling other serious conditions, according to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).
RIVM reports a slight uptick in confirmed cases, from 4.5 to 5.5 per 10,000 people last week. Despite this, officials note no significant surge in infections.
