Relief is here at last. The authoritative Great Flu Survey confirms that the flu season has peaked and is now declining across the Netherlands.
On December 30, 2010, the survey issued a warning that the flu was lurking. This wave persisted for over eight weeks, claiming 35 lives from Mexican flu in the Netherlands. Thankfully, by early March, reported cases have fallen considerably.
Netherlands vs. Belgium
Over 22,000 volunteers from the Netherlands and Flanders contributed to the Great Flu Survey. Data shows flu cases have dropped significantly for more than a week now. The wave is officially over. Belgium reports slightly higher numbers than the Netherlands, with minor upticks in the northeast. However, these pale in comparison to the sustained high activity in southern and northeastern Europe.

Carnival Caution
Vigilance remains key. The Great Flu Survey continues through May 1 this season, monitoring for any potential second, smaller wave. Carnival celebrations demand extra care—crowded events can spark rapid spread.
