Neuralink Faces Allegations of Severe Animal Suffering in Monkey Brain Implant Trials

Neuralink, Elon Musk's brain implant initiative, is advancing toward human trials after animal testing. Yet, a nonprofit organization claims the experiments led to the deaths of nearly a third of test monkeys amid reports of intense suffering.

Formal Complaint Filed Against Neuralink

Led by Elon Musk, Neuralink is developing a computer chip implant for the human brain. The technology aims to enable paralyzed individuals to control computers with their thoughts and treat conditions like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. In the long term, it could enhance human cognitive abilities.

Neuralink recently announced plans for human clinical trials. However, a February 10, 2022, Business Insider report highlights potential setbacks. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), an animal advocacy group, filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture against Neuralink.

PCRM reviewed 700 pages of documents from tests on 23 monkeys, including veterinary reports and necropsies.

Concerns Over Invasive Procedures

The allegations cover 2017-2020, when PCRM claims 15 of 23 monkeys died in extreme pain due to the brain implant tests. Issues cited include substandard care and highly invasive cranial procedures, allegedly violating nine animal welfare regulations. Deaths resulted from self-mutilation, brain hemorrhages, and euthanasia after severe infections. All monkeys reportedly suffered debilitating health effects.

In February 2021, Neuralink demonstrated a monkey playing video games using thoughts via the implant, showcasing significant progress and addressing welfare concerns. This latest complaint may delay human trials planned for 2022.
