Study Reveals: 70% Mask Compliance Could End COVID-19 Pandemic

Researchers from the National University of Singapore have analyzed mask efficacy in combating SARS-CoV-2 spread. Their findings suggest that if 70% of the global population consistently wore masks, the pandemic could be eradicated.

Masks: A Standalone Solution to Curb the Pandemic

The COVID-19 crisis has disrupted daily life worldwide, but evidence-based measures offer hope. Even without vaccines, governments have implemented strategies like mask mandates. A peer-reviewed study in Physics of Fluids (November 24, 2020) from the National University of Singapore highlights masks as the key intervention.

"Face masks, such as surgical masks with around 70% effectiveness, could eradicate the pandemic if at least 70% of people used them consistently in public," the researchers conclude.

Drawing from mask efficacy studies and epidemiological data, the team confirms masks significantly reduce viral reproduction rates. Lead researcher Sanjay Kumar notes that even cloth masks, though less effective, provide meaningful protection when worn regularly.

FFP2 Masks for Maximum Protection

Mask material, fit, and wear duration influence performance. The study emphasizes droplet sizes: larger ones (5-10 µm) are common, while smaller ones (<5 µm) pose greater risks.

N95 (or FFP2) masks excel at filtering aerosol-sized droplets, achieving at least 95% effectiveness against 0.3 µm particles. Fluid-resistant and favored by healthcare workers, these masks set the gold standard.
