Pulmonologist Bertrand Dautzenberg: Cloth Masks Match FFP2 Protection When Everyone Wears Them

As France lifted its COVID-19 lockdown on May 11, 2020, public use of cloth masks became mandatory outdoors. Renowned pulmonologist Bertrand Dautzenberg argues that, against an unmasked person, a cloth mask rivals an FFP2 if universally adopted.

Qualifying the Expert's Claim

Early in the pandemic, authorities downplayed masks for the public, but attitudes shifted. Post-lockdown, cloth mask adoption soared, fueled by online tutorials—notably the French Association for Standardization (AFNOR) spec, downloaded over 500,000 times.

In an April 17, 2020, France Info interview, Dautzenberg—a veteran lung specialist—declared: "If everyone wears a cloth mask, then it will be as effective as wearing an FFP2 mask." While cloth masks offer modest viral filtration, his logic merits examination.

Dautzenberg estimates they block at least 70% of droplets. He elaborated: "If the person with COVID-19 wears one, instead of emitting 100 droplets, they emit only 30. If the other person also wears a cloth mask, that's reduced by two-thirds more—to 8-9 out of 100 originally. Overall, 90% efficiency matches top masks." Thus, mutual cloth masking may equal one FFP2 user facing someone barefaced.

Cloth Masks: Better Than Nothing

Debate surrounds this view, yet Asia's mask culture linked to limited transmission. France prioritized healthcare amid critical shortages—even for staff. Reality check: a cloth mask trumps none.

France's mask stock debacle underscores the crisis. In 2009: 1 billion surgical masks, 900 million FFP2. By 2017: just 700 million, ravaged by budget cuts and logistics failures.
