Do Homemade Masks Work Against COVID-19? Insights from Health Experts

Faced with a shortage of medical masks, many are turning to homemade fabric alternatives. However, France's Ministry of Health has deemed them ineffective against COVID-19. So, what's the real value in making them?

The Rise of Fabric and Paper Towel Masks

Online tutorials for DIY fabric masks have exploded amid lockdowns and supply shortages. With France reporting over 11,000 confirmed cases and nearly 330 deaths, demand for homemade options is surging.

As reported by AFP, the trend gained traction via a March 8, 2020, video showing a man crafting a mask from paper towels, plastic, and staples, claiming it matched pharmacy-grade effectiveness. Comments featured user-shared fabric mask photos from self-proclaimed seamstresses.

Essential Precautions Remain Key

To assess these masks, AFP consulted France's General Directorate of Health (DGS), part of the Ministry of Health. The DGS notes that asymptomatic individuals don't require masks, but confinement limits outings. Still, homemade masks "may help curb virus spread from symptomatic wearers," backed by studies from 2008 and 2013. They're a potential stopgap when certified masks are unavailable—even hospitals facing shortages have adopted them.

That said, these masks offer minimal protection against viral droplets. "Fabric simply isn't effective—it's a false sense of security," warns Prof. Pascal Astagneau on France Inter. "Masks need rigorous testing. They must be changed every 3-4 hours as they become damp, soiled, and ineffective." Even with regular swaps, prioritize hygiene and distancing.

The bigger risk? A false sense of security leading to neglected proven measures.

Core hygiene guidelines include:

– Wash hands frequently
– Keep at least 1 meter from others
– Cough/sneeze into elbow or disposable tissue
– Discard used tissues immediately
– Avoid handshakes and hugs
