COVID-19 Update: 130 Cases in France, Over 3,000 Global Deaths (March 1, 2020)

130 cases in France

France now ranks as the sixth most affected country by the COVID-19 outbreak. With deaths steady at 2, confirmed cases hit 130 by the evening of March 1. Two days earlier, the government advanced to stage 2 alert, prohibiting gatherings of more than 5,000 people.

Major events have been canceled, including the Paris half-marathon, Cannes' Mipim real estate fair, and Annecy Carnival. Further cancellations are underway, such as the Livre Paris book fair, while the Louvre Museum has closed its doors temporarily.

Investigations into a cluster in Oise department are ongoing. Crépy-en-Valois' mayor tested positive for coronavirus. He is listing contacts from the past 14 days, remains unhospitalized without fever, and is an asymptomatic carrier.

Per the South China Morning Post's March 2, 2020 tally, COVID-19 totals 88,436 confirmed cases, with deaths exceeding 3,000 at 3,041. Recoveries near 45,000.

Italy, a emerging hotspot for under a week, added 500 cases in one day, reaching 1,701 cases and 41 deaths; 83 recovered. South Korea reports 4,212 cases and 22 deaths; Iran 978 cases and 54 deaths. These areas stay concerning despite China's downturn.

Rising cases elsewhere: United States (84), Spain (84), Germany (130). Brazil notes a second case; Czech Republic reports three, previously untouched.
