The 2019-nCoV coronavirus outbreak has surpassed 20,000 confirmed cases and 400 deaths. At the epicenter in Wuhan, a specialized hospital constructed in just ten days has officially opened.
According to the February 4, 2020, report from the South China Morning Post, China has recorded 426 deaths and 20,622 confirmed cases. Hubei province, the outbreak's origin, reported a single-day record of 64 deaths. No additional fatalities have been confirmed outside China beyond the one case in the Philippines.
As pandemic risks mount, tensions have emerged between the U.S. and China. The U.S. CDC has urged “aggressive actions” for screening travelers from Wuhan, describing the situation as “explosive” and “unprecedented”. Beijing has criticized these as “hostile statements”.

China’s commitment to build a hospital in ten days drew global attention—and it delivered. As reported by NBC News, this new 1,000-bed facility in Wuhan is equipped specifically for coronavirus patients. A second, larger hospital is also under construction nearby and expected to open soon.
China has acknowledged shortages of masks and protective gear. Reports highlight improvised homemade protections and, in Hong Kong, unscrupulous sellers offering low-quality, counterfeit, or even recycled masks.
The outbreak continues to spread, prompting strict measures. Authorities have quarantined Wenzhou (over 250 cases), mirroring Wuhan’s protocols: transport shutdowns, confinement of 9 million residents, closed public venues, extended holidays until February 17 for businesses, and March 1 for schools.
