Just days after Italy's nationwide lockdown began, France has advanced to Stage 3 of its COVID-19 response plan. Only essential businesses remain open amid a doubling of cases in three days. Spain, meanwhile, has enacted a near-total quarantine for its population.
As reported by the Huffington Post, France's Director General of Health, Jérôme Salomon, announced the shift to Stage 3 on March 14, 2020. He described it as the "onset of a rapid epidemic across national territory." Confirmed COVID-19 cases have doubled in just three days, reaching 4,480 cases and 91 deaths, with around 300 patients in serious condition.
Authorities urge the public to minimize contact and stay home whenever possible. President Emmanuel Macron has promoted teleworking to reduce movement, while Prime Minister Édouard Philippe advised outings only for "essential shopping, basic exercise, or voting." The first round of municipal elections proceeds on March 15, but bars, restaurants, and non-essential shops are closed.
This marks the highest level of France's epidemic plan, established in 2011 following the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic.
Spain has rapidly surpassed France in cases and deaths. In 24 hours, it reported 1,500 new cases, totaling 6,391 confirmed cases and 195 deaths. As detailed by Le Point, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez outlined strict measures: residents can only leave home for work or essential shopping, with non-essential travel prohibited and non-vital businesses shuttered.
Spain's trajectory closely mirrors Italy's—the world's second-most affected nation after China—which reported 21,157 cases and 1,441 deaths on March 14 evening. Germany raises concerns with 4,585 cases (exceeding France's), though deaths remain low at 9. Europe faces widespread impact, with no country untouched.
Iran ranks third with 12,729 cases and 611 deaths, but strict measures appear to have stabilized the outbreak temporarily. South Korea exemplifies effective containment, holding at 8,086 cases and 72 deaths. The U.S., now under a national emergency, reports a sharp rise to 2,726 cases and 54 deaths.
In Latin America and Africa, cases emerge: Caribbean islands and all South American nations are affected, led by Brazil with 151 cases. About half of African countries report infections, notably Egypt (109 cases/9 deaths), Algeria (37/2), and South Africa (38). In Asia (beyond China, Japan, Korea), nations like the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and India have 100-300 cases each. Worldwide: 156,391 cases, 5,798 deaths, and 75,751 recoveries.
