France has surpassed 1,000 COVID-19 cases, with Italy nearing South Korea's totals after locking down much of its northern territory to contain the outbreak.
Official figures from the evening of Sunday, March 8, show 1,209 cases and 19 deaths in France, corroborated by Johns Hopkins University's real-time map. The nation remains in stage 2 of the epidemic response, though stage 3 appears imminent.
Key new measures include a nationwide ban on gatherings of more than 1,000 people. In Oise and Haut-Rhin, 300,000 students are out of school starting Monday. Health Minister Olivier Véran has announced a decree to expand telemedicine access immediately, aimed at slowing the virus's spread.
Italy has enacted strict quarantines across Lombardy (including Milan) and 14 northern provinces. The country reported 133 additional deaths in a single day, pushing totals to 7,375 cases and 366 deaths, per reports from Le Temps.
Italy's case count now rivals South Korea's (7,382 cases, around 50 deaths), with the quarantine impacting 17 million citizens.
