A landmark French study from the University of Montpellier, surveying 17,000 adults, found that about 16% feel younger than their real age. These individuals enjoy superior health and a greater likelihood of reaching advanced ages compared to others.

Strikingly, those who feel 8, 11, or 13 years older than they are face 18%, 29%, and 25% higher risks of early mortality, respectively.

How Can This Be Explained?

First, people who feel and appear younger tend to embrace healthier habits. They prioritize nutritious eating, regular exercise, routine medical check-ups, and robust social connections. This fosters a virtuous cycle: better choices enhance well-being, reinforcing that youthful outlook.

Second, perceiving oneself as younger equips individuals to handle aging's challenges more effectively, leading to stronger physical health and sharper cognitive function, including memory.

The Flip Side

Yet, the relationship is bidirectional. Depression or preoccupation with age-related concerns can accelerate feelings of old age.
