Back-to-school season often brings head lice outbreaks. Even with improved lice treatments available, infestations remain common in the Netherlands.
Did you know?
Every year, about 10 percent of primary school children get lice.
You can't completely eliminate the risk, as lice spread easily, but these proven steps can significantly lower the chances.
1. Keep jackets separate on coat racks
Lice transfer quickly between touching coats. Avoid school coat racks and use protective lice capes or bags instead.
2. Discourage close head-to-head play
Limit games where children's heads touch to reduce direct transmission.
3. Skip extra hair washing
Lice thrive regardless of hygiene—this is a myth. No need for unnecessary washing.
4. Apply hairspray or gel
RIVM research shows children using these products are less prone to lice.
5. Monitor local outbreaks
Check the Luizenradar website for reported infestations in your area.
6. Avoid sharing hair accessories
Don't share brushes, bows, or towels, as they can harbor lice.
7. Perform regular lice checks
Lice multiply fast, so check daily. Focus on warm spots: behind ears, under bangs, crown, and nape. Use a nit comb over a white towel or paper—lice (grey-blue or red-brown) and nits (tiny grey-white eggs near roots) will be visible.
Too late? Child has lice? Stay calm—follow these steps for effective treatment.
