Netherlands Defies Europe s Obesity Surge: WHO Forecasts Decline in Overweight Rates

Europeans are gaining weight, but experts predict a decline in overweight rates in the Netherlands by a few percentage points.

Rising Obesity Across Europe
By 2030, obesity levels are expected to climb continent-wide, prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to warn of an 'obesity epidemic.' This projection draws from BMI data across various countries.

The Netherlands Stands Apart
Nations like Ireland, Spain, Greece, Sweden, Austria, and the Czech Republic face the sharpest BMI increases. In contrast, the WHO report forecasts improvement for the Netherlands: overweight men drop from 54% in 2010 to under 50% by 2030. Obesity rates among men fall from 10% to 8%, and for women from 13% to 9%.

No Room for Complacency
The WHO urges governments to intensify efforts in promoting healthy diets and curbing marketing of unhealthy foods.
