NDM-1 Superbug Detected in Netherlands: RIVM Reports Three Cases, One Fatality

Alert: A dangerous new superbug has emerged in the Netherlands, linked to three patients treated by the Center for Infectious Disease Control at the RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment). One case was fatal.

Key context: The deceased patient suffered from a serious underlying condition. The other two have made full recoveries.

RIVM Director Roel Coutinho identifies it as an intestinal bacterium carrying the NDM-1 genetic element—a transferable piece of DNA that makes various bacteria highly resistant to antibiotics.

Probable source: Plastic surgery abroad
Its arrival in Europe is puzzling, but experts suspect medical tourism. Many Europeans seek cheaper procedures in India and Pakistan, where doctors routinely prescribe potent new antibiotics. This practice accelerates the antibiotic resistance arms race.

Roel Coutinho warns: "We retain a few effective antibiotics for now, but resistance could spread there too. Prompt detection in patients is vital—we've introduced targeted measures. Cases here remain extremely rare."

Caution advised: The UK's Algemeen Dagblad reports over 50 infections there already.
