West Nile Virus Emerges in Europe: Key Facts for Blood Donors

If you're planning to donate blood, blood banks like Sanquin are now asking about your recent trips within Europe to protect the blood supply.

West Nile Fever
West Nile fever, traditionally a tropical disease, is increasingly reported in popular vacation spots such as Italy, Greece, and Turkey. Health authorities, including Sanquin—the organization overseeing Dutch blood banks—have introduced a four-week deferral for donors returning from risk areas.

Effective Protection
The virus was confirmed in these destinations last year, along with cases in Romania, Hungary, and Russia. Mosquitoes transmit it, so in southeastern Europe (and tropical regions), experts recommend using DEET-based repellents and covering arms and legs to reduce bite risks significantly.
