It's long been known that a pregnant woman's unhealthy lifestyle can harm her unborn child. Now, research from Maastricht University reveals that a father's habits matter too.
Key Research Findings
Health scientist Joost Linschooten, one of the first to explore this, analyzed how a father's lifestyle affects DNA in his sperm and his child's DNA. He studied 81 families, examining the father, mother, and child. The results? Smoking negatively impacts DNA—even if the father quit just months before conception. Interestingly, drinking one or more cups of espresso showed a protective effect, according to Linschooten.
Expert Advice
More studies are needed to pinpoint the full implications of this DNA damage, which may contribute to genetic abnormalities and childhood diseases. Linschooten advises men planning to conceive: "Quit smoking as soon as possible, ideally when you stop using contraception."
