Cardiovascular Disease: The Leading Cause of Death in Women and Why Awareness Matters

Did you know cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death for women? It claims one in three women's lives. Greater research and awareness are urgently needed.

Only 34% of Dutch adults aged 40-75 recognize that most women die from cardiovascular disease. Over half still believe cancer is the top killer among women, according to TNS NIPO research commissioned by the Heart Foundation.

Key insight: While 59% view CVD as the primary health issue for men, research has historically focused on male subjects. These findings don't always translate directly to women.

Raising awareness: The Heart Foundation launches a women's campaign on September 12, 2020, aiming to spotlight CVD in women and fund vital research.

The secret reveal: On September 12, women are invited to share their 'secret'—friends and family can uncover it via donations. This fun initiative funds research to unlock CVD mysteries. The foundation also kicks off Dress Red Day on Wednesday, September 21, 2020. Wear red to show you care.
