Menopause Symptoms or Heart Warning Signs? What Every Woman Needs to Know

Experiencing menopause symptoms? Proceed with caution—these could signal heart problems.

As experts from the Heart Foundation note, women often dismiss heart symptoms as typical menopause effects, such as abnormal fatigue, sweating, shortness of breath, nausea, and poor sleep. Stay vigilant: the risk of cardiovascular disease increases by 36% immediately after menopause compared to before. Yet, only 40% of Dutch women are aware of this, per TNS NIPO research commissioned by the Heart Foundation.

Number one cause of death in women
Alarmingly, one in three women dies from a heart attack or stroke. Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading killer of women. Post-menopause, risks for high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol rise, making a healthy diet and regular exercise essential. Always differentiate: symptoms like fatigue, sweating, shortness of breath, and insomnia closely mimic heart issues.

Need for women-specific research
Despite more women (57 per day) than men (51 per day) dying from cardiovascular disease, studies have historically focused mainly on male patients. Since 2006, only 30% of trials include women. Insights from male-centric research don't fully apply to women, so more gender-specific studies are crucial for equitable care. The Heart Foundation's "We Need Your Heart" campaign pushes for greater focus and research on women's heart health.

Live Q&A on Facebook
