Onze Lieve Vrouwen Gasthuis is positioning the innovative Essure sterilization method as the new standard for permanent contraception.
The Essure method utilizes a slender hysteroscope, eliminating the need for general anesthesia or traditional surgery.
A flexible tube is gently inserted through the vagina and cervix to place tiny coils in the fallopian tube openings. These coils, lined with polyester fibers, promote scar tissue growth that seals the fallopian tubes within about three months, delivering highly effective, irreversible contraception backed by extensive clinical use.
Currently, only select health insurers cover Essure, though adoption is growing with more expected soon.
In the Netherlands, over half of couples over 35 have one partner sterilized. Men choose vasectomy four times more often than women, often due to the belief that female options require major surgery—a threshold Essure now addresses.
