Why Taking Iodine Pills Preventively Near Nuclear Plants Is Unnecessary and Potentially Harmful

Following the nuclear incidents at Japanese power plants, many Dutch residents near nuclear facilities have grown concerned about radioactive exposure. However, health experts strongly advise against taking iodine pills as a preventive measure.

In several Dutch and Flemish municipalities with nearby nuclear plants, iodine tablets have been distributed amid public anxiety over Japan's disaster. Residents are urged to prepare for potential radioactive material leaks.

Harald Wychgel from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) emphasizes that taking these pills without immediate danger—even if you live near a nuclear plant—is unwise. It provides no benefit and may cause harmful side effects.
