Nearly 20 years ago, Jason Padgett had little interest in math. But a severe head injury forever altered his brain, revealing math in every aspect of his world.
Jason Padgett was a futon salesman in Alaska before moving to Tacoma, south of Seattle, USA. A party-loving individual with scant regard for mathematics, he spent his free time socializing. On September 13, 2002, everything changed, as detailed in a BBC article from July 8, 2020. Leaving a karaoke bar, Padgett was brutally attacked by two men, suffering severe head trauma. Afterward, his perception shifted dramatically—everything curved now appeared slightly pixelated.
"The water swirling down the drain no longer looked smooth and flowing; it appeared as tiny tangent lines. Everything manifested mathematically," Padgett explained.
Puzzled, Padgett turned to online research and connected with Berit Brogaard, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Miami, USA. She suspected synesthesia, a perceptual condition affecting about 4% of the population. Synesthesia involves the persistent blending of senses from a single stimulus, due to co-activation of brain regions.
For some, music evokes colors; for others, emotions trigger physical sensations. In Padgett's case, it meant projecting mathematical formulas into his visual field.
To test her theory, Brogaard brought Padgett to Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland, for a series of MRIs. During scans, equations—some incorrect—flashed on a screen. Results showed Padgett accessing brain areas unavailable to most people consciously: his visual cortex now integrates with mathematical processing regions.
Brogaard diagnosed synesthesia combined with acquired savant syndrome. Today, Padgett embraces a new life of global travels, sharing his story and raising awareness.
