This start-up is developing a tattoo that disappears after a year!

The tattoo world may soon attract a new kind of clientele. Indeed, an American start-up has just launched a tattoo whose ink dissolves about a year after injection. This offer is therefore an alternative to permanent tattoos.

Biodegradable polymers

Based in New York (United States), the start-up Ephemeral Tattoo offers an alternative to permanent tattoos. The objective? Reach new customers with tattoos whose ink disappears between 9 and 15 months after the injection. It must be said that getting a tattoo is synonymous with risk taking. Indeed, it is sometimes a question of a reason, of a first name to others that it is possible to regret later. As Forbes magazine explains in an article from March 25, 2021, six years of development allowed Ephemeral Tattoo to find the formula for a suitable ink. This is an ink composed of biodegradable polymers . However, the injection process is identical to that of traditional tattoos.

At the origin of this idea, we find Josh Sakhai, one of the co-founders of the start-up. While studying at New York University, this son of an Iranian-born family was afraid to commit to a permanent tattoo. He has also tested some of the fifty recipes himself allowing us to find the right formula.

An interesting alternative

Research was done in an in-house lab with contribution from dermatologists . In addition, the tests incorporated components that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – the competent authority in the United States – had already approved. Josh Sakhai also explains that unlike some permanent tattoos, those at Ephemeral Tattoo do not suffer any blurring or dilution over time. Indeed, the lines keep their sharpness and fade evenly as the deadline approaches. Let's also mention the fact that only the black color is available. However, others may appear in the near future.

Josh Sakhai believes that beyond offering an alternative to permanent tattoos, it is a very reliable temporary tattoo solution. You should know that in some parts of the world - especially in Asia - tattoo artists offer semi-permanent designs using vegetable ink and less needle penetration in the skin. Unfortunately, cases of damage or incomplete disappearance of these tattoos are frequent.

Ephemeral Tattoo opened a salon in late March 2021 in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. The goal is to reach a new clientele in the United States:tattoo lovers who do not dare to get a permanent tattoo. Another segment of this new clientele concerns people already tattooed or wishing to give it a try for a permanent tattoo.
