New Allergies During Pregnancy: Causes, Management, and Postpartum Outlook

Many expectant and new mothers share stories online of suddenly developing allergies during pregnancy or postpartum—sometimes to everyday items like foods, pets, or metals they've handled without issue before. For some, these resolve gradually; for others, they become lifelong.

Why Do New Allergies Develop During Pregnancy?

Pregnancy naturally suppresses the immune system to protect the fetus from rejection—a vital adaptation. However, this can open the door to new sensitivities, such as to non-precious metals (like in jewelry), gluten, dust mites, pollen, pets, and more. A single allergy or multiple can emerge.

Hormone Balance Changes

Shifting hormones alter how the body responds to substances, potentially triggering allergies. Postpartum, many see improvement or full resolution as hormones stabilize. Conversely, some experience worsening as balance normalizes.

Allergies and Breastfeeding

Managing allergies is challenging during breastfeeding. Dietary changes or medications often help non-lactating individuals, but options are limited for nursing moms to avoid impacting the baby negatively.

Common Allergies Reported During Pregnancy

As a mother who's navigated this firsthand, I know the frustration. I already managed hay fever, pork, yeast, kiwi, and insect bites—but late in pregnancy, a pet allergy surfaced.

Initially mistaken for hay fever flare-ups, symptoms intensified postpartum. With our two dogs visiting every long weekend (they travel with my stepdaughter), exposure is cyclic: symptoms ease when they're away, then spike upon return, building in severity.

Breastfeeding rules out most medications, as our youngest won't take bottles. I minimize contact and rely on our Rowenta Air Purifier for relief. Itching is relentless, especially as the dogs seek affection unknowingly.

I hope symptoms fade post-weaning, allowing safe medication. Fingers crossed—otherwise, adaptation continues.
