4 tips against heartburn

Heartburn is a common complaint. You can do this against it.

Read first: What exactly is heartburn?

1. Change your diet
If you suffer from heartburn after eating certain foods, you can try to reduce the heartburn by making small adjustments to your diet.

How do you do that?
Watch your diet, take into account when you eat and adjust the size of your portions. Do not eat a meal in the hours before going to sleep and reduce the amounts. Be careful with coffee, alcohol, oranges and salty foods, which cause heartburn. There is some evidence that a high-fiber diet could reduce heartburn symptoms, but its effectiveness has not been proven.

2. Change your lifestyle
By adjusting your lifestyle, you can often significantly reduce symptoms of heartburn.

How do you do that?
Make sure your body is at a healthy weight and stop smoking. Do you sleep badly due to heartburn? You can raise the head of your bed to prevent stomach acid from entering the esophagus easily.

3. Relaxation Stress has a different effect on everyone's body. You may suffer from heartburn due to stress or physical exertion (after eating).

How do you do that?
Avoid putting too much stress on your body. If you bend over, you are more likely to see acidic stomach contents back into the esophagus. If you must lift heavy, always bend your knees. When stressed, take sufficient rest and wear clothing that does not pinch.

4. Go to the doctor
Do the above adjustments not help and do you suffer from heartburn more and more? If in doubt, consult your doctor.

How do you do that?
Try to describe your complaints as accurately as possible, so that your doctor can help you properly. A diary is useful to gain insight into the complaints. Watch for symptoms such as a burning pain behind the sternum, not wanting to lower your food, vomiting or difficult bowel movements.
