Will there be an explosive increase in health insurance premiums in 2019?

The big fuss about health insurance premiums usually starts at the end of the year, but after an annual report by CZ, a lot of coverage about health insurance started yesterday.

In its annual report, CZ predicts that health care premiums will rise at least twice as much next year as it did this year.

From 2017 to 2018, the premium increased by 3 percent to €116.25 per month. If the increase for 2019 is twice as high, it will be an increase of 84 euros on an annual basis. And that might still be a conservative estimate.

How come?
CZ has been offering health insurance policies below cost for a number of years. It is being met with reserves, but the end of those reserves is in sight. This means that an increase in the premium may be unavoidable.

Speculate
Reactions to the post are coming in from different angles. The Ministry of Health, for example, says that experience shows that it happens several times during the year that health insurers or other organizations warn about or report an increase in health care premiums.

The Consumers' Association is also critical. Insurers may want to prepare us for the worst to be able to say later this year that they have done their best to keep the increase as small as possible.

The premiums for 2019 will be announced in mid-November.
