Women’s Dissatisfaction with Overweight Intensifies with Age: Survey Insights

Women who have been overweight for years report growing unhappiness with their weight as they age. This trend emerges clearly from a survey conducted by Mijn Geheim and Valtaf.nl, involving 1,175 respondents who reflected on their body image across key life stages.

Childhood
One in three participants was already overweight during childhood. Yet nearly all recalled a carefree period, free from weight-related distress.

Puberty
Dissatisfaction often began during puberty, as hips and breasts developed. Notably, two-thirds now recognize their weight was healthy at the time and wish they could reclaim that body. Still, 35% of these women started dieting during this phase.

Young adulthood
By young adulthood, 85% of those who viewed themselves as overweight attempted diets. Success was elusive: 48% struggled to stick with them, and 71% experienced the frustrating yo-yo effect. Life events compounded issues—46% gained weight after marriage, and 47% faced challenges post-first child.

Adulthood
After age 35, dissatisfaction peaked at 90%. Many tried dieting again, but adherence remained tough. Beyond frustration, 63% reported feeling genuinely unhappy due to their weight struggles.
