A cozy neighborhood can significantly improve your health and well-being.
Renowned German sociologist Sigrid Mohen explored the effects of cozy neighborhoods on health starting in 2020. Three years ago, she relocated to the Netherlands to conduct this research, surveying more than 60,000 Dutch participants.
Happiness
The study revealed that residents in neighborhoods where they feel comfortable and experience strong togetherness report higher happiness levels. This sense of joy, in turn, positively impacts overall health.
The precise mechanisms linking a cozy neighborhood to better health are still emerging, but Mohen offers compelling insights. For instance, friendly neighbors share valuable information, recommend trusted general practitioners, and address problematic youth behavior promptly. Moreover, feeling at ease in one's community reduces home stress levels.
Countryside vs. City
Rural areas excel in communal activities, fostering stronger neighborhood bonds. Urban dwellers often lack these connections, correlating with poorer health. Mohen recommends city residents invest in relationships through neighborhood projects.
