Want to enhance your health, happiness, and fitness? Prioritizing a sense of purpose in life is a proven starting point. Research indicates that people with stronger purpose make healthier lifestyle choices and perceive their health more positively. This analysis stems from a long-term study, including fresh surveys of 749 diverse participants averaging 60 years old.
The study specifically examined how purpose influences health independently of the Big Five personality traits—openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Participants evaluated their sense of meaning, health behaviors, and self-reported health, merged with Big Five assessments from two years prior.
Health behaviors assessed included frequency of eating healthy vegetables, sleep quality, and routine flossing. Participants also detailed typical weekly strenuous or moderate exercise, such as running/jogging versus walking; surfing/kayaking/windsurfing versus sailing; basketball versus volleyball; vigorous swimming versus easy swimming, and similar activities.
Researchers analyzed these behaviors individually and alongside demographics and personality factors. Consistently, a sense of purpose showed a strong direct impact on self-reported health and a moderate indirect influence on health behaviors.
