Dutch Face Challenges in Adopting Healthy Lifestyles: Key Insights from CBS Statistics

According to recent Statistics Netherlands (CBS) data, one in two Dutch adults doesn't get enough exercise, one in ten is obese, one in ten consumes excessive alcohol, and more than one in four smokes.

Over recent years, the Dutch have made little to no progress toward a healthier lifestyle. For instance, the proportion of people exercising sufficiently in 2009 remained unchanged from 2007 and 2008 across all age groups and genders.

Moderate overweight rates among adults aged 20 and older were nearly identical in 2009 compared to 2008, while the number with severe overweight increased.

One positive note: Over a longer term, smoking rates in the Netherlands continue to decline slightly—23% of women and 31% of men currently smoke.
