Erectile Dysfunction: An Early Warning Sign of Heart Disease, German Study Reveals

Researchers from Saarland University in Germany have uncovered a critical link: men with erectile dysfunction face double the risk of heart attacks compared to those without.

The study showed that men struggling with erectile dysfunction not only suffered heart attacks twice as frequently but were also more likely to die from them. Additionally, strokes occurred 10% more often in this group. Experts explain that erectile dysfunction often stems from impaired blood flow to the penis, signaling early arterial narrowing that can affect the heart.

Over five years, the research tracked more than 1,500 men with existing cardiovascular issues, monitoring for heart attacks or strokes and regularly assessing for erectile dysfunction.

The team warns that erectile dysfunction is frequently managed solely with medications, masking the underlying issue. Once symptoms improve, men often skip follow-ups, leaving serious cardiovascular risks unaddressed.
