Rising Tide of Female General Practitioners in the Netherlands: Key Trends from NIVEL Data

Currently, 38 percent of general practitioners (GPs) in the Netherlands are women—a figure projected to surpass 50 percent within five years, according to the authoritative NIVEL GP Register.

The overall number of GPs in the Netherlands has grown by 16 percent over the past ten years. However, growth patterns differ sharply by gender: the number of female GPs has nearly doubled, while male GPs have declined by 6 percent.

This trend is set to accelerate, with 70 percent of GPs in training being women. Consequently, women are expected to form the majority of GPs within the next five years.

Another key shift is the rise in part-time work. As early as 2009, 86 percent of female GPs worked part-time, compared to 41 percent of their male counterparts—a pattern likely to intensify.
