Smoking habits among Dutch adults are shifting notably. Daily smokers are on the decline, while occasional smokers are on the rise, according to a comprehensive TNS NIPO study commissioned by STIVORO, a leading anti-smoking organization.
The number of daily smokers continues to fall: from 22.2 percent in 2008 to 21.5 percent in 2009. Moreover, average daily cigarette consumption has decreased to 14.4 from 14.9 the previous year.
While daily smokers are decreasing, the overall smoker percentage has edged up from 27 percent in 2008 to 28 percent in 2009, driven by more sporadic smokers.
The study also reveals that a quarter of those who quit in 2009 cited health considerations. Financial factors played a role as well.
A total of 19,693 Dutch adults participated in this authoritative smoking survey.
