Former RTL News Presenter Sander Simons Passes Away After Two-Year Lung Cancer Battle

Less than ten months ago, Sander Simons, former RTL News presenter, opened up in Santé about his new love, his recently published book, and his ongoing battle with illness.

Diagnosed with lung cancer in February 2008, Simons passed away on January 5 after a courageous two-year fight. He chose active euthanasia to maintain control over his fate.

In De Telegraaf, he shared his reasoning: “My fate is that I fall into a coma. Then others would have to decide my fate. I do not want that. All my life I have taken matters into my own hands, and now I am.”

In his Santé interview, Simons reflected on the positives amid the hardship: “When you are sick, people dare to express their love. Old fights don't matter anymore. I notice that I have become more sensitive, more open.” His illness also deepened his openness to love, leading him to meet his wife just months after diagnosis. “I am more sensitive, let my feelings play a bigger role in my life.”
