Expert Warns: High-Risk Single Mothers Should Avoid Home Births

High-risk single mothers should not give birth at home if complications are anticipated, says Prof. Koos van der Velden, chair of the Pregnancy and Birth Steering Group. His guidance draws from years of public health expertise to prioritize safe deliveries.

Prof. van der Velden highlights cases like prior childbirth difficulties, psychological challenges, or conditions such as diabetes. He also points to women in high-rise apartments where emergencies might require fire department rescues, and those facing domestic abuse. For abused women, he recommends birth centers offering secure environments and expert medical oversight.

The reach of Dutch maternity care is often limited, van der Velden notes. Greater outreach to at-risk groups—who may not even be on maternity care radars—is essential. Providers must clearly explain the value of professional support during pregnancy and birth to prevent complications.

Prof. Dr. Koos van der Velden holds the chair in Public Health at Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen.
