Research from the Center for Reproductive Medicine at Amsterdam's Academic Medical Center (AMC), led by gynecologist-in-training Inge Custers, reveals that women who lie on their backs for 15 minutes after artificial insemination have a 50% higher chance of pregnancy compared to those who stand up immediately.
The study found that staying lying down with legs drawn up post-procedure increases pregnancy odds by one and a half times. Women who got up right away had an 18% success rate, while those who rested achieved 27%.
While the exact mechanism remains unclear, experts recommend discussing this simple step with your doctor. A successful treatment can help avoid more invasive options like IVF.
Artificial insemination—injecting semen directly into the uterus via syringe—is the world's most common fertility treatment. In the Netherlands alone, nearly 30,000 women undergo it annually.
