A 2019 study revealed that nearly 6 million French people held gym memberships, with about 4% showing signs of addiction—driven by an unrelenting desire for the 'perfect' body. Bigorexia most commonly impacts young men in bodybuilding, fitness, rowing, or cycling.

Individuals with bigorexia experience significant distress if they miss daily workouts, structuring their lives around exercise sessions and fixating on weight, body composition, and performance.

This compulsion leads to psychological strain and broader health issues, including chronic exhaustion, fractures, tendonitis, muscle tears, and even heart attacks. Many continue training through injuries, exacerbating damage. Socially, it strains relationships with family, friends, and work.

Contributing factors include the endorphin rush from exercise, which creates euphoria, alongside psychological triggers like emotional voids or low self-confidence. Treatment through sports psychology is highly effective, though there's a risk of substituting one addiction for another.
