As nations like France enforce strict lockdowns amid the COVID-19 pandemic, encouraging developments emerge from China. In Wuhan, the epicenter, rigorous government measures have proven effective, bringing the country closer to recovery.
China faced early criticism for downplaying the COVID-19 outbreak's severity, including controversies like the case of whistleblower doctor Li Wenliang. It wasn't until January 20 that President Xi Jinping acknowledged the crisis's gravity. During Chinese New Year, Wuhan—the outbreak's origin—was locked down, followed by other cities.
Most regions implemented social distancing and transport shutdowns. Citizens responded responsibly, venturing out only when essential. The nation ground to a halt, with towns and villages erecting barricades to block outsiders.
Authorities swiftly tracked the 5 million Wuhan residents who traveled during Lunar New Year, requiring them to self-report and quarantine at home for 14 days. China mobilized its security and police forces extensively, leveraging citizens' traceability to enforce compliance.
These steps curbed the spread nationwide by mid-February, with daily new cases plummeting. Yet Hubei and Wuhan remained challenged. Rapidly constructed hospitals uncovered thousands more infections, peaking at around 2,000 new cases daily.
The healthcare system buckled under shortages of tests and beds; milder cases were sent home. Wuhan's fatality rate stood at 4.6%, far exceeding the national 0.89%. Officials intensified lockdowns, limiting exits and using neighborhood committees for food distribution to isolated residents.
Symptomatic individuals were separated from families, housed in requisitioned hotels, stadiums, schools, and administrative buildings to prevent household transmission.
On March 18, 2020, China reported zero new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases for the first time—a milestone. While 34 imported cases were noted, mostly from returning overseas Chinese, airports enforced 14-day escorted quarantines in hotels.
Though these firm measures prioritize public health over individual freedoms, they delivered results: over 80,000 cases and more than 3,200 deaths nationwide. As Europe adopts containment strategies—albeit milder—strict adherence will be crucial to avoid prolonged outbreaks.
