Drones Delivering Defibrillators: Lifesaving Speed Tested in Canada

In a groundbreaking Canadian trial, drones delivered defibrillators to cardiac arrest victims faster than traditional emergency services, highlighting their potential to transform healthcare responses.

Advancing Drone Use in Healthcare

Drones are rapidly evolving as vital tools in medical logistics. UPS recently secured the first Part 135 Standard Certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), enabling an airline dedicated to drone deliveries for hospital supplies and time-critical organ transplants.

In Ontario, Canada, InDro Robotics, Cradlepoint, and Ericsson conducted a successful demonstration, as reported by ZDnet on October 7, 2019. With local authority approval, drones transported defibrillators directly to heart attack scenes.

Outpacing Emergency Services

Time is critical during cardiac arrest—every minute without defibrillation reduces survival odds. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) empower bystanders, as their voice-guided instructions allow untrained individuals to administer aid effectively.

In the trial, drones covered 16 km and arrived seven minutes ahead of emergency responders. This capability could be transformative for underserved rural areas, bridging gaps in traditional services.

The test proved highly effective, paving the way for broader adoption in emergency care.
