Large IARC Study Links Daily Soft Drink Consumption to Higher Mortality Risk

A landmark study led by researchers at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization, analyzed the link between sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened soda intake and risks of total and cause-specific mortality. The research drew on data from over 450,000 participants, tracked for an average of more than 16 years.

Compared to those consuming less than one glass of either type of soft drink per month, individuals drinking two or more glasses daily showed a significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality.

Daily intake of two or more glasses of artificially sweetened soft drinks was positively associated with circulatory disease deaths, while one or more glasses of sugar-sweetened soft drinks linked to higher digestive disease mortality.
