I Tracked My Daily Sugar Intake: Shocking Results from a Week-Long Test

As part of my personal challenge to live more sugar-consciously, boost energy, and feel better, I logged my meals for a week. Charting my intake revealed the true extent of my daily sugar consumption – and prompted a closer look at everyday habits. How much sugar do you consume each day?

How Much Sugar Was I Consuming Daily?

Deep into Céréal's sugar-conscious challenge, I was shocked by my baseline: over 20 sugar cubes' worth per day, despite avoiding overt sweets. Sugar sneaks into so many products, stacking up quickly.

Average Daily Sugar Consumption for Adults

Wageningen University research shows adults average 122 grams of sugar daily – about 28 large sugar cubes. This total includes natural and added sugars, yet it's still startling.

Examples: A sandwich with sprinkles has 6 sugar cubes. Daily jam sandwich? 23 grams (over 5 cubes). Even orange juice, a vitamin-packed choice, delivers 7 cubes per glass.

Sugar Content in My Typical Daily Meals

A standard day's breakdown:

  • Cottage cheese with walnuts and apple – ±18 grams (4 sugar cubes)
  • Snack: egg cake – ±21 grams (4.5 sugar cubes)
  • 2 sandwiches, 1 with sweet topping and 1 with egg – ±25 grams (5.5 sugar cubes)
  • Snack: (muesli) bar – ±35 grams (7.5 sugar cubes)
  • Dinner: fresh vegetables with sauce or flavor packet – ±3-20 grams (1-4.5 sugar cubes)
  • Cheese, sausage, chips or nuts – ±3 grams (1 sugar cube)

Simple Product Swaps Cut Sugar in Half

Without eating less or dieting, I've swapped smarter: Céréal coconut biscuits replace egg cakes (0 grams sugar, delicious). Céréal chocolate sprinkles (5 grams per serving vs. 22 grams regular). Their strawberry jam (3 grams vs. 20 grams).

These changes save over 50 grams (11 sugar cubes) daily. Proof that small tweaks make a big impact – and spark creativity for more.

Adopt a Sugar-Conscious Lifestyle

Tracking opened my eyes. Curious about your intake? I challenge you to try – better health and energy await.
