Breakthrough bleeding is spotting or light bleeding outside your pill-free week. Birth control pills reduce the buildup of the uterine lining (endometrium), making it thinner. This thinner lining brings blood vessels closer to the surface, allowing blood to escape more easily—much like how thin skin leads to quicker bruising.
