The oak processionary caterpillar is the caterpillar of a moth. The caterpillar has stinging hairs that are dangerous for humans. They can cause irritation, itching and rashes. Some people react more violently to it and may suffer from inflamed eyes, fever, vomiting or pneumonia.

When it is warm, the caterpillars crawl lower in the tree and sometimes even to the ground. This makes them more difficult to combat and people come into contact with them more easily.
When threatened, caterpillars release their stinging hairs. Due to the wind, they can easily end up on walkers and cyclists. As the name of the caterpillar says, it is common in oak trees, try to stay away from it.
Do not scratch or rub the skin. Rinse your skin or eyes well with water. Wash your clothes at 60 degrees to remove any remaining stinging hairs. You can also apply a soothing cream containing menthol or aloe vera. If you have a severe reaction, go to the doctor.
