Every year, around 3,000 people experience psychosis for the first time. Those affected often face significant prejudice and misunderstanding, which must change to foster better support and recovery.
What is psychosis?
Psychosis involves a combination of symptoms, including feelings of mistrust, hearing voices, mood swings, or reduced ability to plan and learn. It can manifest as sounds, images, unfounded fears, or suspicions that only the individual perceives—an intense experience that disrupts emotional balance.
The importance of support
Recovering from psychosis is challenging amid negative reactions and biases. Building social support requires greater public awareness of psychosis and sensitivity toward those affected.
Dispelling myths
This week, the Doe Eens Goed Gek campaign launched to address ignorance about psychosis and challenge harmful prejudices.
