Dementia is on track to become the leading disease worldwide. In the Netherlands, 1 in 5 people will develop it, rising to 1 in 3 among women. Even healthy individuals feel the impact as loved ones face this challenge.
Breakthrough Ahead
Currently, a quarter of a million Dutch people live with dementia, a figure projected to double by 2040 without intervention. The encouraging news: leading scientists are confident that within 20 years, we'll see major advances in preventing or treating Alzheimer's, the most prevalent form of dementia.
Fueling Research Through Awareness
Achieving this requires sustained research funding. That's why Alzheimer Nederland launched a poignant national campaign highlighting the loss of music memories. 'These statistics paint a stark picture but often overlook the profound emotional toll—the heartbreaking moment when recognition fades and memories vanish,' explains Gea Broekema-Procházka, director of Alzheimer Nederland. 'This emotional side demands attention, inspiring our campaign to celebrate what we cherish: unforgettable music memories.'
