Tea lovers, take note: Researchers from the University of Western Australia have discovered that drinking black tea can reduce blood pressure by about 2 to 3 points.
Among the many teas offering health benefits, white tea supports digestion and immune function, while green tea helps manage cholesterol. Now, black tea joins the list, with evidence showing its positive impact on blood pressure. Consuming three cups daily led to a measurable drop of 2 to 3 points in participants.
The Study
In a six-month trial, researchers followed 95 men and women. Half drank three cups of black tea each day; the other half received a placebo beverage matched for taste and caffeine content.
At the end, the black tea group showed significantly lower blood pressure than the placebo group. "These modest reductions in blood pressure can decrease the prevalence of hypertension, heart disease, and stroke by up to 10 percent," explained lead researcher Jonathan Hodgson.
