Erasmus MC Study: Older Mothers More Likely to Deliver Heavier Babies

Research from Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam reveals a clear link: the older the mother, the heavier the baby at birth.

This comprehensive study involved 8,500 Dutch women. Key findings? Among mothers over 40, 10% delivered relatively heavy babies, compared to just 3% of those under 25.

On average, newborns weigh about 3,500 grams. Babies tipping the scales at 4,500 grams or more are considered heavy, while those under 2,500 grams fall into the low birth weight category.

Heavier babies face potential long-term health implications. For instance, they may be at higher risk for obesity later in life. Researchers note that the exact reasons why older mothers tend to have heavier babies remain under investigation.
