EU Commission Proposes Ban on Added Sugars in Fruit Juices to Combat Obesity

The European Commission has proposed banning added sugars in fruit juices to promote healthier beverages and tackle rising health concerns.

Europe has repeatedly highlighted growing obesity rates and related issues. Building on efforts to limit salt concentrations in foods and encourage fruit and vegetable intake, the Commission now seeks a total ban on sugar additives in fruit juices.

The proposal awaits approval from EU Member States and the European Parliament. It allows an exception for nectar, a traditionally high-sugar drink, provided it carries a clear label on added sugars.

The Commission also aims to recognize the tomato as a fruit for juice production across Europe.
