Fruit Flies and the Yo-Yo Effect: Insights from Wageningen University Research

After shedding pounds, many people see the weight return quickly—often with extras: the notorious yo-yo effect. New research shows fruit flies experience this too.

Fruit Flies on a Diet
Scientists at Wageningen University & Research (WUR) studied the yo-yo effect in fruit flies. They discovered it slightly shortens lifespan, but flies on a continuous diet fared even worse.

Fruit Fly Lifespan Breakdown
Flies with unrestricted diets lived an average of 61 days. Yo-yo dieters lasted 60 days, while constant dieters survived just 49 days.

Weight Fluctuations in Flies and Humans
Fruit flies and humans both pack on pounds when overeating. Though differences limit direct comparisons to human longevity, these findings suggest yo-yo dieting might not be as detrimental as constant restriction.
